Yoga is perhaps the oldest discipline... (hunting for tigers and
making love in caves may be older even though those might not be thought of as "disciplines").
Unlike many popular ways to exercise, it doesn't aim to raise the heart-rate or
work on specific muscle groups, or ask you to conform to an ideal body
shape.
Originally its postures and breathing exercises were to
bring stability and relaxation so its practitioners could sit for long
periods of meditation. Sitting still for long periods without getting stiff,
tired or being in pain is harder than you might think! Yoga postures (called
asanas in Sanskrit) move the body in many ways to strengthen it in a balanced
way for good health, and stretch it to release stiffness and tension, helping
to restore inner balance of the body and mind.
Asanas can be practiced at any age and any level of fitness.
Done in conjunction with conscious breathing they stimulate circulation,
digestion, nervous and endocrine systems keeping you healthy and energetic.
There are many tales of yogis living to a great age with all their physical
and mental faculties intact. Even those with limitations can enjoy its
many benefits using simple props, modifications, and the desire to learn.
Yoga is for everybody. And it's never too late to start
and enjoy its many benefits.
